Afterschool Enrichment

WDS Afterschool Enrichment features a wide range of options for kids of all ages and interests. With a staff culled from the worlds of art, literature, naturalism, athletics, science, and several physical disciplines, our ASE programs offer excellent opportunities for students to learn, grow, strengthen, and have fun!

Nature becomes both classroom and teacher! Tracker and naturalist Joe Krein teaches how Earth provides all we require for health and happiness, no matter the circumstances. Learn the local plants and how they can be used for food, medicine, clothing, cordage (string and rope), fire making and shelter building. Discover the secret worlds of animal kin, a sneak-peek into their “kitchens and bedrooms.” We’ll use field-guides, cameras, and computers to create a map of the WDS campus.

Using only paper and pencils, acclaimed illustrator and children’s book author David Goldin engages the natural creative spirit, sparking creativity using cartooning, paper balloons, paper airplanes, and storytelling through images. With folding, drawing, and prompts, Fun with Paper encourages kids to explore their imaginations away from screens.

Join us as we use programmable Sphero to study and better understand the laws of motion that govern the universe! Students will design an experiment, then program the Sphero to conduct their experiment and collect data!

Adding foam swordplay to the schoolyard classic, our version of Capture The Flag is much more active, dynamic and team-oriented than its tag-based counterpart.  In one of our CTF classes, students can expect to engage in a numerous active games that push the boundaries between competitive and cooperative interaction, learning to act out high-intensity physical play safely and responsibly.  The evolving complexity of our games will force them to build both leadership and team-building skills.

JEWELRY CREATIONS

Students will learn to create beautiful beaded jewelry. We’ll focus on basic stringing and finishing techniques utilizing an assortment of beads, string, clasps and ear wires, plus traditional bead weaving techniques using seed beads.In addition to being the Art Teacher at WDS, Danielle owns her own jewelry business and has been selling her work as well as teaching jewelry making for over fifteen years.

PATHFINDER TABLETOP ROLEPLAYING GAME

Pathfinder is based on Dungeons and Dragons 3rd edition. (Players are encouraged to purchase or download the rulebook: http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/.)

Participants will role-play heroes on a quest for fame and fortune in a fantastic sword and sorcery setting. Tabletop role playing provides a fun experience while developing creativity, planning, and problem solving skills.

First Level characters will be provided, but players who have access to the rules may bring their own character in, provided the Character Sheet is filled out using 20 Ability Score Points (Table 1-1).
