Art
Upper school students explore the elements and principles
of design in depth, and are presented with an overview of
all the different art media, including drawing, painting,
photography, and sculpture. Our strong ceramics program gives
students ample opportunities to study and create, and to work
with different glazing and firing techniques. We sculpt both
in the classroom and around the campus, in a variety of media
from soapstone to snow. They also take inspiration from nature,
and study the works of such nature-based artists as Andy Goldsworthy,
creating their own masterpieces from leaves, twigs, stones,
blossoms, ice and vines. Students also experience printing,
collage, bookmaking and sewing.
Physical
Education
Our classes have a shared focus between traditional physical
education activities and team sports and play, problem solving,
and trust activities including Adventure Games. Body fitness
and health are encouraged through the study of the physiology
of exercise and healthy nutrition.
Electives
Elective choices are generated with student input. Elective
courses encourage and allow for the exploration of areas of
individual interest. Some examples of elective choices are:
African Dance and Drumming, Ceramics, Filmmaking with the
Children's Media Project, Photography, and Drama.
Super Adventure
Our unique and popular "Super Adventure" course
provides the opportunity for students to solve fun and challenging
initiatives as a group. Leadership and cooperation are encouraged.
Examples of some of the intriguing activities include 'poison
yogurt' and 'blind sundae creation.'
Service Learning
This class allows students to participate in community
service activities and encourages empathy and civic involvement.
M-Term
A special 5-day break from regular classes, usually occurring
in March (thus the M in M-Term), consisting of a service-oriented
trip designed and implemented by the students. Activities
include community, environmental, and societal service.
Senior Project and Seminar - choose Senior Year above.
