Overview

The Upper School Program at Woodstock Day School
excels at place-based, environmental education. Our 30-acre
campus is loved and utilized as an important resource for
History, English, Art, Physical Education, and Science. Woodstock
Day School teachers encourage wonder, exploration and academic
skill in students. It is this combination of open-eyed wonder,
student freedom to explore topics and issues, and academic
rigor that sets WDS apart from other schools. Our campus serves
as a classroom, as do the many field trips students take.
Teachers balance experiential education and classroom academics
in order to achieve a more complete curriculum.
Our program focuses on educating our students
to become citizens of the world. Students are often asked
to broaden their perspectives from our own community and its
concerns to the larger world. To facilitate understanding
of greater global issues, students are required to demonstrate
an advanced understanding of a foreign language. Students
also engage in the development of week-long intensive service
learning projects as well as more regular community service
commitments. This connection to the community at large allows
our students to be action-oriented and learn to develop and
trust their own voices.
The student-to-teacher ratio is quite small.
We often have 6-10 students in a class. Classes are organized
around a student's ability and desire for challenge, and may
often be composed of multiple ages. This insures that students
are able to develop, and be appreciated for, their strengths
and use them to focus on improving their weaknesses. Small
class sizes and creative scheduling allows individual instruction
and personal attention to student learning and needs. Students
are celebrated as individuals and are encouraged to develop
strong and lasting relationships with their teachers. Teachers
will follow students throughout their six years in the Upper
School.
We take very seriously our charge to prepare
our students for life after Woodstock Day School. Our juniors
and seniors receive personal attention in their college preparation
process.
